Staff at DHL Argos in Castleford have just marked the success of their reading year with a special event. Usdaw Union Learning Rep Sean Dixon knew they had plenty to celebrate. Spurred on by his enthusiasm, 36 people completed Reading Ahead in 2015/16, a significant increase on previous years. They have also been running a number of book club sessions featuring Quick Reads and other titles chosen by staff.
Sean arranged for Victoria Prendergast, author of The Army, Depression, Drugs and Me, to talk about how she has overcome some major challenges in her life and shared them in a book just published by Amazon. The audience also heard from Dawn Bartram from Wakefield Libraries, Genevieve Clarke from The Reading Agency and General Manager Steve Gallagher. Usdaw ULR Monika Paczkowska and project officer Martyn Warwick attended the event too.
Kim Cutts (pictured here) has enjoyed taking part in Reading Ahead and the reading group. “The Quick Reads work really well. You get to the last page quicker! We all enjoyed The Baby at the Beach Café.”
Fourteen people signed up for the next Reading Ahead at the event; “The gauntlet has been thrown down for the race to 50 completers for next year with the lure of a bronze certificate,” says Sean.
The event was also a great opportunity for the local library to promote their resources and services such as local archives and family history. The reading group at DHL Argos will start again in the New Year once the busy pre-Christmas period for the workforce is over.
